48 Hour Book Challenge - The Beginning - June 2014

Due to senior graduation (I can't believe my baby graduated! :() and many grad parties (I had many of these students in kindergarten!) my goal is to put in 12 hours. I have from now until Monday, June 9th, at 7am.

I have 3 books I would love to finish:

  1. Prophecy by Ellen Oh - diverse author and characters
  2. The Great Greene Heist  by Varian Johnson - diverse characters and author
  3. Tankborn by Karen Sandler (reread) - diverse characters
I have about 2 hours before the next party. Let's get this reading party started!

The Sunday Salon - Summer Reading is Coming to Town - June 2, 2013

Our school year is coming to an end.  The students in my TV Studio class did some really nice book trailers. Despite the spelling and grammar mistakes, I can see how their video skills have improved.  It will be sad to say goodbye to them, but I'm so happy to get back to full-time in the library!  I look forward to having more time to partner with teachers in the fall!

The other thing I'm looking forward to - seeing the TIGER EYES MOVIE and meeting JUDY BLUME!
CANNOT WAIT!

Saturday, June 8th, 2013 at  the Tivoli Theater! Sign up here!

And at the end of this week - two of my favorite things come into play! The 48 Hour Book Challenge (#48hbc) and  Summer Book-A-Day (#bookaday)! YIPPEE! This is how I mark the end of the school year and the beginning of summer reading!

This year the 48 Hour Book Challenge runs from 7 am Friday, June 7th until 7 am Monday, June 10th. You can pick any consecutive 48 hours in that time span to read as much as you possibly can! This year's challenge will be hosted by Ms. Yingling and Abby The Librarian.

Last year I met my goal of reading 20 hours and donated $20 to Reading is Fundamental!  This year, as noted above, I'll be taking some time to see JUDY BLUME so I won't have as much time to read.  Will have to figure out my goal by Friday!

This Saturday will also kickoff my 4th year participating in Donalyn Miller's summer reading challenge.  One goal is to encourage students to prevent the summer slide by setting an example for them. Another goal is to catch up on books you've been meaning to read or to find new books to introduce to students in the fall. Either way it's win-win!  And all books count! Children's books, adult books, picture books, graphic novels, memoirs, narrative nonfiction, committee reads, and mind-candy! Just read!

My break officially runs Saturday, June 8 - Sunday, August 11, 2013. That's 65 days which means my Summer Book A Day goal is to read 65 books!

You can read several books in one day or no books on some days.  It's an average! No pressure! That is the beauty of this challenge. It's only a challenge against yourself!

Happy Reading! And, look for the return of the Summer Throwdown - School Librarians vs Teachers reading challenge in July!

Cat Girl's Day Off by Kimberly Pauley - bookaday #2

Cat Girl's Day Off
Kimberly Pauley
Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: 3.5/5

I picked this one because of the cover. It's awesome in it's simplicity. Cool looking Asian kid who reminds me of one of the Amazing Dancer's friends.  Big fluffy pink cat.  What choice did I have but to pick it up?

Natalie's lives in family of super-Talented people. They work for the government. Natalie, however, has a Talent she disparages, she can understand and talk to cats.  Not all animals, though. Basically, cats.  So right there you know there are going to be some laughs because cats are notorious for their superiority.  As a "Kat"hy I know what I'm talking about.  JK!

Natalie and her celebrity-obsessed friends get caught up in a kidnapping personality swapping gig that they need to use Natalie's Talent to foil.  Hilarity and hi-jinks ensue. Especially since the celebrities are remaking Ferris Beuller's Day Off!

I liked the cast of characters and the twist with who was kidnapped.  It was a little slow in parts but mostly fun. I also enjoyed the mostly realistic setting.

This one's put out by Tu Books.  They are an imprint to watch!

Black Heart by Holly Black

Black Heart (Curse Workers, 3)
Holly Black
Rating: 4/5
Genre: Fantasy
Source: purchased

This is the final book The Curse Workers trilogy.  We are reunited with Cassel who desperately wants to gain Lila's forgiveness.  He's also being "trained" by his brother, Barron, to be a government agent when he leaves school.  Add to this trying to negotiate the strained relationship between his roommate Sam and Sam's ex-girlfriend, Daneca.

Black Heart is about lies.  The ones we tell to protect loved ones that just end up being the ones that hurt.  I really enjoyed this one but it didn't really feel like the end to me.  Or I just don't want to see the end of Cassel.

About the cover - they changed the cover on me after I'd already bought books 1 and 2.  I loved those covers so much more than these new ones.  I thought they old ones had character.  Also, now my set doesn't match. Book!

Whew! It was a busy weekend and it was hard carving out the time to read.  The Amazing Dancer was here which means lots of shopping.  I was lucky to leave a graduation party early, otherwise I wouldn't have made it! It was wonderful to remove some books from the TBR pile. Expect short #bookaday reviews of each finished book later this week.

As always, Thanks to MotherReader (@MotherReader) for sponsoring such a wonderful challenge to kickstart my summer reading! Also, a big thank you to all the people who stopped by to encourage me on the blog and on twitter! I didn't get to do much of that this year but I really appreciate your time and comments!

48 Hour Book Challenge and Summer Bookaday

It's party time! As noted by my esteemed colleague @libraryfanatic: The second awesome reason to be a school librarian - summer's off to read! And what better way to kick off my summer and my summer reading than to join MotherReader's 48-hour Book Challenge and The Book Whisperer's Bookaday Challenge!

Courtesy: MotherReader
48 Hour Book Challenge
MotherReader's two-day reading fest runs from Friday, June 8, 2012 at 7am to Monday, June 11, 2012 at 7am.  You get to pick your 48 hours in that time frame.  There are rules including your hours must be in a row! But you can do as many or as few as you want!

I'm going to try to for 20 hours this year! I'll start at 8 pm Friday and end 8pm on Sunday.  I have a few errands and a graduation party, but should have the time pretty much to myself!

I'm officially off from Friday, June 8 to Sunday, August 12, 2012. That's 66 days! So my goal is to read 66 books before I go back to work on Monday, August 13th! So exciting!!!!

It's Monday: What Are You Reading - 6/4/12

Check out Teach Mentor Texts with Jen and Kellee to find more #kidlit bloggers joining in this special meme.

In The Past
I finished 10 books these past three weeks.

Me and Earl and The Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews - Mock Printz

Starters by Lissa Price - interesting. Old people rent young people's bodies in order to be young again. And the young people get to eat and possibly find shelter.

Boy21 by Matthew Quick - Mock Printz

How to Survive the Apocalypse by Lucas Krauss - recommended by Amazing Dancer - Boy meets girl. Girl is highly religious. Boy decides he can be religious too!

The Letter Q: Queer Writers' Note to Their Younger Selves edited by Sarah Moon - Great book put out by Scholastic. I gave away two copies!

Article 5 by Kristen Simmons - recommended by Amazing Dancer - girl gets arrested because mom had her out of wedlock. 17 years ago. She needs to find mom and break her out of jail. Ex-Boyfriend turned soldier decides to help. Can she trust him?

Chomp by Carl Hiassen - different from other Hiaasen MG fare.  This one is much more YA with lots of action and near-death experiences compounded by a drunken father and a crazed reality tv star.

Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross - fun read. Not the best written but filled with entertainment, action and romance.

Hush by Elise Chayil - recommended by Amazing Dancer - A Chassidic community turning their back on a nine-year old leads to a coverup that one member still can't get past. So sad!

Girl in the Clockwork Collar by Kady Cross - more fun!

In the Present
Dragon Castle by Joseph Bruchac - Batty About Books next book.  Check out Part 1.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling - hoping to read the whole series and watch each movie this summer.

In The Future
This Friday, June 8, 2012 starts the 48 Hour Book Challenge and Summer #Bookaday! I'm so excited that once again these start at the same time for me! Last year I met my goal of 15 hours. This year I hope to do 20 hours! I'll post about both on Friday but in case you can't wait - here's my post from last year - NO Summer Slide and 48HBC.

No Summer Slide and The 48 Hr Book Challenge

It's my favorite weekend of the year.  Motherreader's 48 hour Book Challenge (#48HBC) started this Friday, June 3rd.  This weekend is also the official start of my summer break which means The No Summer Slide Bookaday Challenge (#bookaday) starts for me too! Double Woot!

What's that you say? You know not of which I speak?

The 48 Hour Book Challenge
Check out the rules for the #48HBC and know that this is reading challenge that focuses on HOURS read.  It runs from Friday, June 3rd 7a till Monday June 6th 7a.  You can read for any 48 hours within that time period but those hours must be consecutive.

Last year I read around 18 hours or so. Not enough to win any prizes but enough to jumpstart my Newbery reading!  This year I'm walking a 5K and going to a graduation party so my goal is 15 hours.  I'm going to start at 10pm Friday and end at 10pm Sunday.  Weird I know, but it works for me.

Follow our progress on Twitter! - use the hashtag #48hbc to join in!

Book A Day Challenge
Donalyn Miller, author of The Book Whisperer believes teachers/educators should put their money where their mouths are, so to speak.  If you want kids to read, you need to read.  This is my second summer participating in BookAday where my goal is to average one book a day for every day of my summer vacation!! Does that mean I will read a book each day? Sometimes! Sometimes 3! Sometimes none! It's an average so there's no pressure! Also, picture books count!  Last year I read 68 books!

My summer vacay runs from June 4 - August 14, 2011.  That's 72 days.  So that's my goal.  What I love about bookaday is the lack of pressure.  If I read a book in one day? Sweet! If I don't read a book? Sweet!

Follow the progress on Twitter - use hashtag #bookaday if you want to join in!

The Sunday Salon - The 48 Hour Book Challenge - Final Update

I made it! I finished the 48 Hour Book Challenge. Due to losing my notebook and Blogger not letting me post, I don't have official final numbers but here's the best I could remember:

Challenge Final
Books Read: 5
One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
Green Witch by Alice Hoffman
Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper
Very Far Away From Anywhere Else by Ursula LeGuin
The Prince of Mist by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Countdown by Deborah Wiles- 122 pgs.

Total pgs: ~1,492

Total Time: 18? Cant find notebook!
At last count, I had done 11 hours.  Since then I finished two books and read some pages in Countdown, Dreamland, and Harry Potter.  That took me at least 7 more hours.  Possibly more.  I was logging time in a notebook that I believe I lost in the grocery store.  I will go check on Tuesday and update this then.  I will put the official numbers in green.

The 48 Hour Book Challenge - Post 6 - HP and The Goblet of Fire

Every year I re-read the Harry Potter series in anticipation of the movie.  This year I decided I would get the adult editions from Bloomsbury UK and see if they are any different. With the exception of a few words and a variant in spelling, so far the books are the same.

I mostly expected this one to be different because it marks the beginning of all the darkness and the first death.  I'm just a little over half done - they've finished the first task in the TriWizard Tournament and we've had the Yule Ball.  We'll see if things change once we get to the maze.

The 48 Hour Book Challenge - Post 5 - Out of My Mind

Out of My Mind
Sharon Draper
Atheneum/Simon and Schuster
295 pgs.

Melody has cerebral palsy and is stuck in a wheelchair. Outside of her family and her neighbor, Mrs. V., know one believes Melody is "normal", that she can think and understand just like any other eleven-year-old.  So, on top of trying to find her place in 5th grade, Melody also has to deal with frustration at people's misconceptions and misunderstandings. Many teachers treat her like an imbecile and all the children with different abilities are dumped in a room with an ever changing roster of adults, each of whom feels they know better than the one before.

"Wouldn't it be cool if I had somebody to write words over my head so people would know what I'm thinking?"

Melody gets something similar and her life is changed.  She's still not like the other students but she can participate though after so many silent years, it's hard for people to change their thinking.  Some people come around but still, Melody wishes, for once, she could be like the other kids.

Out of My Mind captures how students at this age feel; whether or not they have cerebral palsy.  Students aren't sure where, or if, they fit in.  Sometimes they feel so bad about themselves, they want to make fun of other students.  They make jokes, they whisper, they giggle, and all the while, they wonder: am I good enough? Do I look right? Will you be my friend? Am I normal?

Melody's first words to her family made me cry.  We have our voices, we should use them.  I can't say how well Draper captured a student with cerebral palsy.  I know she has a daughter that Melody is modeled after. I love that she didn't make her a character to feel sorry for but one to root for and support.  The story moved at a smooth pace with just a little bit of drag on some of the quiz points.  I liked that Melody wasn't a know it all either.

I give this 4 copies.  I think it's one that many teachers should read, at a bare minimum the ones that work with special needs students.  The book gave me a greater appreciation for the students and the staff.

The 48 Hour Book Challenge - Post 4 - Green Witch

Green Witch
Alice Hoffman
Scholastic
135 pgs

This story reminded me of Heartsinger by Karlign Stoffels.  It was more of a folk tale than a contemporary novel.  Green's family was in the city the day the Horde decided they needed to bring everyone back to the good old days; women in the kitchen, progress denied.  She lost her mom, her dad, and her sister.  It's about a year later and she is starting to recover, still grieving but able to function.  She's also starting to wonder about the boy she once loved.  She's decided she wants to write down everyone's story, mainly because the Horde burned all the books and also she need's answers to why she is still here, alone.

She sets out to find The Enchanted, those believed to be witches.  Each imparts wisdom and an item that helps Green explain things to herself.

Green Witch is short and engaging.  I loved the simplicity and beauty of the language. "Can I find anything, or simply lose more?"
Green Witch is a story about looking deeply into yourself and those around you to find what you need.  You must take what you need.  You must give what is needed.

"This is how much love weighs...Nothing if you don't take it when it's offered. Everything if you accept what's given to you."

I give this 2 copies. It was good but I don't know if I students will enjoy it as much as myself and teachers.

The 48 Hour Book Challenge - Post 3 - One Crazy Summer

One Crazy Summer
Rita Williams-Garcia
Amistad/HarperCollins
215 pgs

Delphine and her sisters, Vonetta and Fern, are on their way to Oakland, CA to visit their mother who they haven't seen in 6 years.
"Cecil Johnson--mammal, birth giver, alive, an abandoner - our mother. Statement of fact."

Delphine, the eldest at eleven, had always taken care of her sisters and she didn't really know how to do anything else.  She wasn't sure she wanted to spend 28 days with this woman.  Cecil, AKA Nzila, did not want children.  Then or now.  She warned the girls to stay out of her way.  They were sent to Black Panther meetings in the morning, to get breakfast.  "We didn't come for a revolution.  We came for breakfast." But they met people who would quickly become friends and they learned more about their relationships with each other as well as with the woman who gave them birth and then left over a name.

One Crazy Summer was not about the Black Panthers but about family and what it means.  How family comes in forms we are not always ready for.  How sometimes it just might be necessary to take care of yourself first.  Or not.

There were times when I felt Delphine's voice was too grown-up but when I thought about her years of taking care of her younger sisters, of sitting around with Big Ma watching the news, of pretty much raising herself, I understood that she would say those things and act that way.  Her eleven year-old inner self was in a battle with her forced to be older behavior.

I give this one 4 copies. Pick it up.

And We're Off - The 48 hour Book Challenge - Post 1

I'm 4 hours late! Busy day buying Nooks for the school library. This sets my goal to 26 hours this year!

I'm going to start off with One Crazy Summer. Most of my stack is realistic fiction so I'd better include some fantasy or I wont make it.  I'll see you at 10pm or when I finish the book.  Whichever comes first!
BTW, It's 8pm!

48 Hour Book Challenge - Second Time Around

Last year I participated in the 48 Hour Book Challenge hosted by MotherReader and I'm happy to do it again this year!!

I will be starting on Friday, June 4th at 4pm and reading till Sunday at 4pm.  During that time, I'll tackle some yard work, do some laundry, exercise, hang with the Amazing Dancer, etc, etc, etc.

Since this isn't about the number of books but the hours spent reading, my goal is to read 30 hours.  Last year I did 22 1/2.  I originally planned to do 36 hours but...trying to get closer to realistic this year!

I'll pull from the list at left and aim for short reviews after each book.  I'll see you tomorrow!

What book should I start with?  Check the list at left and I'll start with the book with the most votes!

No Summer Slide Here! – A Reading Invitation

mockprintz2011 Donalyn Miller, teacher and author of The Book Whisperer, has issued an invitation:

Read one book a day for every day of your summer vacation.

In the classroom, Ms. Miller has challenged her students to read at least five books over the summer.  She explained the “summer slide” and what her plans were to avoid it.  She then reminded students of their powerful position: they get to decide what they will read.  Students then chose five books they plan to read over summer.  Read The Book Whisperer blog for more information.

Donalyn tries to read at least one book per day of her summer vacation.  And she’s asked us to join her.  I’ve decided to accept her invitation and hope you will too!

My summer vacation starts Friday, June 4 and runs to Wednesday, August 11.  That’s 67 days, so my challenge would be to average at least 67 books.  Yes, average, so if I read 3 books one day but none the next, no big deal.   And since we all have varying vacation days, the average will be different for each of us.  What I love is the opportunity to practice what I preach.  If I want students to read over summer, I should too.

I made a list of at least 60 books I want to tackle, most of them Young Adult/Middle Grade reads but I threw in some classics, adult books, and some professional reading.48hbc

And, to give myself a jump start, I’ll be joining MotherReader’s Fifth Annual 48 Hour Book Challenge.  This starts Friday June 4th at 7am and lasts until 7am Monday, June 7th.  Just pick your 48 hours!

So, what do you say?  Will you set an example and stop the summer slide and average a book day during your summer vacation?  Join us!  Look for my list by Friday!

48 Hour Book Challenge - Final Wrap-up

Ok - this is my final post for the Fourth Annual 48 Hour Book Challenge. I didn't do as well as I'd hoped. I really wanted to read at least 10 books but I ended up only finishing 4! Maybe I'm not cut out for this type of thing? Or maybe I need to leave the house in-between books or try not to read one book at a time. I don't know, just not up to my normal reading self lately.

Final Numbers:
Books Completed - 4
Death Run by Jack Higgins
Wings by Jason Letchoe
Flightsend by Linda Newbery
Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

Pages Read - 1,030
Add the books above plus
Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith - 32 p
Miracle Girls by Drayton and Vanderbilt - 17 p
Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev - 76 p
Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder - 60

Hours Spent - 22h 32m
Reading - 17h 32m
Networking - 3h
Reviewing - 2h

The good news is I will purchase four books for Color Online's Summer Book Drive. So I'm happy about that. Well, this was eye-opening - I can't just read in a row like the good old days...I need breaks, fresh-air, etc...weird! So my goal for next year will be 8 books and 36 hours. That should be easily doable with my normal rate of reading.

Sunday Salon - 48 Hour Book Challenge - update 4 -

Finished:
Wings by Jason Lethcoe
Pgs: 63 (glossary and excerpt inc)
35 min to finish from last post

Story of Edward MacLeod who goes to Foundry school, school for misfits who can't survive anywhere else. Edward's there because his mom died and he was sent there. He's 6 1/2 ft tall and has an itch he can't scratch. Turns out he's a specially powerful Guardian. Interesting but a little confusing. Too much jumping around. The glossary in the back should have been in the front because it really helped. Book 2, Flight, sounds promising, will have to remember to pick it up from library.

Book Challenge Time:
Books: 3
Pgs: 832
Time: 14hr 30m

Finished:
Death Run by Jack Higgins
pgs: 62 to end
Time: 50m from last post

Not as good as Sure Fire. Lot more draggy. Jade's character was a real...didn't really care for her this time around. The coincidences piled up in this one and I had a hard time suspending disbelief. I'm sure I'll read the next one, Sharp Shot, but will get it from library instead of buying.

Book Challenge Time:
Books: 4
Pgs: 894
Time: 15hr 20m

This weekend I'm participating in the 48 hr. Book Challenge. I didn't set a goal as this is my first challenge. I only commit to buying a book for Color Online's Summer Book Drive for each book I finish. So far I owe them four books. Feel free to match my donations!

It's been tough for me, this challenge. I can't seem to get "into" any book. I keep stopping and starting or just thumbing through my piles of book or looking at past posts trying to decide what to read next. I have a few blog tours coming up that I could read for but suddenly none of those are pulling at my senses. What do you do when in a slump?

The challenge will finish at 8 pm EST for me, about 6 1/2 more hours. That can be one mid sized book or two short books. Not sure which to go for: something off my summer reads list or something off my book tour list or some random book pulled out of a hat? WWYD?

Anyway, that's my Sunday Salon for today. I need to read and do chores but will prolly just nap. Also have lots of homework to do and grocery shopping...::heavy sigh::...what's wrong with me?

PS: Total time is 16h 15m (reading/reviewing/networking) and 4 books.
