The Sunday Salon - Riffle Books

from www.rifflebooks.com
I tend to avoid any new social media sites since they appear with such regularity. I liked the sound of Riffle
and decided to try it out.  I was looking for ease of use, integration with my current PLN (professional learning network), and where it fits with sites I already use such as Twitter, Goodreads, and Pinterest.

Riffle - to turn hastily; flutter and shift: to riffle a stack of letters; to riffle through a book.

Do I want to encourage anyone to get through a book quickly? No. My goal is to get people into reading. To savor books. To highlight and comment and come back for more. As a reader, I want to discuss books with people. As a librarian, my job depends on me deepening the love of reading in students and asking them to riffle through a books seems contrary to that mission.

Does Riffle add anything new to my current social media favorites?

I enjoyed adding lists on Riffle, it was easy and fast.  I also love the quality of the book covers. It was almost like Pinterest for books. Almost. You can like but you can't repin or comment. Since you can't comment, it's very limited in terms of the social aspect of reading. Liking is not a conversation. When opening Riffle, you can choose to display "updates" in a row or grid, by books or lists or both.  Unfortunately, unlike Goodreads, I'm not sure if this is a chronological update. I'm only following nine people, but since Riffle is showing you the book cover or the list title and they are a good size, it limits what you can see. If it's a book cover, you look underneath to see if the person recommends it or is reading it. If it's a book list - my favorite aspect of Riffle - you can mouse over for a description of the type of books on the list. The good think about Riffle is you can tweet your lists.

What now?

Riffle is out of Beta and anyone can join. You can sign up via email, Facebook, or Twitter. When I signed up, you could only use your Facebook account, which I don't really use for bookstuff. I would have preferred just to use the email address that's associated with my blog. I only have a few lists on Riffle right now. I'm thinking in future, I'll blog about the list and either link to it or embed it.

Are you on Riffle? What do you think?

Sunday Salon Author Spotlight - Gabrielle Zevin

Gabrielle Zevin writes for adults and young adults. Three of the four books we have in our school library feature a science fiction element.  The fourth book deals directly with identity through memory loss.

Elsewhere (Macmillan/Square Fish, 2006. 304p. )
The first book I read by Zevin. Liz dies and ends up in Elsewhere. In Elsewhere, you live your life backwards from the day you die until before you are born and then you are reincarnated. So cool. Imagine reliving parts of your life while keeping the experience and knowledge that you've gained. How to come to terms with your mental vs physical capabilities? What can you do differently?

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac (Macmillan/Square Fish, 2007. 288p)
If you can't remember who you are, can you become who you want to be? Naomi knocked her head and conveniently forgot all the bad things that were happening in her life. Unfortunately, she also didn't remember any of the good things. And who could she trust to tell her the truth?

All These Things I've Done - Birthright, 1 (Macmillan/Square Fish, 2011. 384p)
I just re-read this one.  It's the first in a trilogy and it's set in a future where chocolate and coffee are forbidden. The mafia families are big on making sure people have their chocolate and Anya, a child of a former mob boss, is trying desperately to sever her ties with the Balanchine Family.  Anya is orphaned with a younger sister and older brother to care for. She unwittingly becomes a pawn in a game between the Families and the wanna-be new District Attorney. Side note: These new covers suck. Anya does NOT have straight hair and us curly-haired girls are disappointed.  If they needed to put a face, they could have chosen one with cooler hair.

Because it is My Blood - Birthright, 2 (Macmillan/Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2012. 350p)
I actually liked this one better than book 1! Lots more intrigue and backstabbing! I could also connect more with Anya and cared about her problems. She embraced her past and determines to make the future better. We learn more about how chocolate came to be banned and we see Anya grow into herself and become a strong female lead.  I was, however, disappointed in her best friend's choices! I look forward to finding out if Anya's plans for the family come to fruition. Side note: Both books have awesome chapter titles!

Sunday Salon Author Spotlight - Jordan Sonnenblick

Jordan Sonnenblick is former middle school teacher whose books go a long way towards bringing reluctant readers into the fold. Although Mr Sonnenblick also writes books for a younger crowd, our library features four of his young adult novels:

Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie

Steven is torn between wanting to make eyes with a beautiful girl from school and wanting to keep his annoying younger brother, Jeffery, out of his hair whenever she comes over for tutoring. Steven's world is turned upside down when Jeffery, only five, is diagnosed with leukemia.

Notes from the Midnight Driver

Alex goes on a spree to get back at his parents. He ends up crashing the car and is sentenced to community service at the local senior citizen's home. He meets Solomon Lewis and both their lives change.

After Ever After

In this follow-up to Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie, Jeffery's cancer is in remission and he's made it to eighth grade.  He attends a regular school but gets extra help since he has trouble walking and sometimes thinking.  He's got friends, and like his older brother Steve, there's a girl whose attention he would love to have.

Curveball: The Year I Lost My Grip

This newest book by Sonnenblick combines sports and photography. Peter grandfather has taught him everything he needed to know about photography. Peter figures he can use this knowledge to his advantage and take the lower level photography class for an easy A. Unfortunately, he's bumped up to the advanced level class, fortunately there's also Angelika. Check out Sonnenblick talking about his new book below.

The Sunday Salon - Spring Break and Other Stuff

Times Square
It's been a busy week. The daughter and I visited New York for Spring Break and two of my teen bloggers did their own spring "break" and started their own blogs!

New York City
We've always wanted to visit New York. I went for a fast weekend with some friends about 6 or 7 years ago but we didn't do a lot of sightseeing. The daughter and I wanted to sightsee and visit a couple of colleges she's interested in attending.

We arrived late Saturday night, put our stuff away and walked to Times Square. It was awesome! There were so many people and so many lights. We tried a shish-kebab from one of the many carts and just people watched until we were too tired and cold!

The next day we visited The Empire State Building to pick up our NYC citypass booklet and because it took sooo long, we stayed to visit the observation deck! *sidenote: the pass is only worth it if you have a LOT of time! It doesn't get you in front of any lines so you spend a lot of time waiting which meant we didn't get to all of the things we wanted to do! And we were there for 3 full days!*

Empire State Building
The audio tour for Empire was fun and informative.

After that we shopped and shopped! At least the daughter did! I pretty much just went along for the ride!
Statue of Liberty
Monday we got up early to head out to The Statue of Liberty Island and Ellis Island.  We did the audio tour for both those places too! It took us almost 2 hours of waiting in line to get on the ferry to Liberty Island! Plan accordingly! Or pre-order your ticket online and schedule a particular time.  Those people had a special line and got through quickly! You also have to go through a form of security. The ferry was pretty crowded but we found seats on the mid-level thankfully. It was pretty cold that day! If you do the audio, consider bringing your own headphones! We couldn't go inside the statue because they were doing renovations but we walked around a bit before taking the ferry to Ellis Island.  Check those ferry times and get there early.

The Ellis Island part of the trip was amazing. The audio tour featured people who'd come to America through the Ellis telling their own stories as well as some additional facts. There were pictures and items from the time period as well.

Since that took up most of our day we found a place to eat then went to visit The Museum of Modern Art (The MoMa).  Afterwards we stopped by Magnolia's for cupcakes.

Tuesday was our college visiting day! Before we went to NYU though, we stopped at the Little Red Schoolhouse! We got to meet Jen Hubert Swan (@readingrants, Reading Rants), Stacy Dillon (@mytweendom, Welcome to My Tweendom) and Karyn Silverman (@infowitch, Someday My Printz Will Come) and Celeste! Not only was it amazing to meet these three phenomenal school librarians in person, their schools were outstanding as well.  It was inspiring!

New York University
We then walked/ran over to New York University for our informational meeting and tour. It was fun walking around the campus and visiting one of the dorms.  Our tour guide was on his game and kept us informed and entertained. Thankfully the day had warmed up because we spent a lot of time outside. Afterwards we headed over to Otto's for lunch (get the gelato!) and then to Columbus University.  Such a different world! Since many people go to CU for grad school, many of the students we saw were older. It was also a traditional campus with beautiful old buildings.  We couldn't get an appointment that day so we tried to do the audio tour on my phone. Unfortunately, the thing died about 1/2 way through!! We continued our walk around any way.  After a while we thought we'd head to Central Park.  We got lost somewhere and never.made.it! After a heated discussion about safety and appearances, we quickly decided to just take the subway back and decide what we wanted to do for the rest of the day.

We ended up visiting Times Square once more! Going full circle so to speak! All in all it was a great trip! We rode the subway and the bus to get around.  We felt like true New Yorkers. Can't wait to visit again!

New Blogs
My two main teen bloggers, Aneeqah and Lucy, both decided to start their blogs in the past week or so! Aneeqah (@AneeqahNSRL) now writes over at My Not So Real Life and Lucy (@KRWLucy) writes over at Keeping It Real With Lucy.  When I recruited these two, I thought they'd be here to take over The Brain Lair when I "retire" but things don't always work out the way you plan! The blogging bug bit them both! I can't wait to read more of their thoughts! Hopefully, we'll have them back here for a few guest posts! In the meantime, please check out their blogs.

Of course, that means I need to dust off my blogging chair! I'd been taking it easy while they ran things over here!! Look for some minor changes at The Brain Lair as I get my feet wet, again!

Happy Easter everyone!

The Sunday Salon - Are You My Newbery 2012 - What the Students Think

We had our final meeting! And the Mock Newbery winners are:

Winner: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Honors: The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Okay for Now by Gary Schmidt

 The titles we read were:
  1. City of Orphans by Avi
  2. Sidekicks by Jack Ferraiolo
  3. Trouble with May Amelia by Jennifer Holm
  4. Icefall by Matthew J Kirby
  5. Inside Out and Back Again by Thannha Lai
  6. Apothecary by Maile Meloy
  7. The Adventures of Sir Gawain The True by Gerald Morris
  8. Divergent by Veronica Roth
  9. Okay for Now by Gary Schmidt
  10. Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick
  11. Bigger Than a Breadbox by Laurel Snyder
  12. Emerald Atlas by John Stephens
  13. Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
  14. Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu
  15. Fingertips of Duncan Dorfman by M Wolizter
Somehow, I'd forgotten some of us met over summer! I forgot to include True...Sort of and Between Shades of Gray on the published reading list!

This year's club was fundamentally different than last year's.  We didn't have any sixth graders and ended up with half as many students.  You can tell that most were older by the titles that won!

Also, due to budget constraints, we didn't get the books until late and didn't have many copies of each. Since many students use the school library as the place they receive books - some dropped out because they couldn't get the books in time.

One thing that was the same; it was requested that we do a "popular" book club.  I think I will move my focus next year.  Maybe read books that are/were on the Battle of the Kid's Books.  As of next month, I'll be moving to a lunch time read for each grade.  3 book clubs per month!! For sixth grade, I'll continue using the above list. For 7th graders - which has one boy - I'm going to use fantasy and for 8th - a mix of contemporary romance, fantasy, and mystery.

The Sunday Salon - The Best

from What I Wore tumblr
I found this tumblr What I Wore and fell in love with it! I checked out Jessica Quirk's book, What I Wore: Four Seasons, One Closet, Endless Recipes for Personal Style from the library and decided I needed to own it.

See, I just buy stuff. And most of it looks the same.  This year, as part of taking better care of myself, I want to look my best too!

The book is divided into sections: Getting Started and then one section for each season.  I'm in the Getting Started phase.  I took EVERYTHING out of my closet and drawers and went through it! The first round was divide into keep, maybe, toss.  I sent 3 garbage bags of clothes to goodwill! Some I'd never even worn and wasn't sure why I bought it! Then I went through the maybes and divided them again - another bag gone.  I was down to a big pile of clothes that Quirk directed me to try on. So I did! Each and every piece. It was at turns, exciting, fun, and depressing.  I divided these clothes into yes, maybe, repair, no.  I put the maybes in a drawer - these were clothes I thought I might be able to fit into later this year. If they were wintry - I put them away.  Then I took the clothes and I hung them all in my closet - by color.
I pretty much just owned gray, black, tan and blue clothes! So sad! Now I need to pick a core color - black, charcoal, or brown. I chose gray cause I like it best of the three. Now I need to build a core collection - just like in the library! I need: blazer, cardigan, camisole, trousers, skirt plus white button-up, lbd, dark jeans and tights.  Can you believe I don't own a white button-up? Not even an off-white one! How could I not??? So I'll be heading out to pick up some things plus decide on my secondary palette  to add some color!  Another thing I like about this book are the sketches - these are real clothes Quirk owns! Makes it seem more doable.
from What I Wore tumblr
Although it's weird to barely have enough clothes to fill a closet - I know I wasn't wearing the rest of it anyway! This past week back to school, I've gotten compliments on what I wore! So, I'm really jazzed to work farther into this book! I also hope to start taking pics of what I'm doing but think I will post those over on tumblr!

The Sunday Salon - Happy New Year - 2012

I hope 2011 was good to you. Maybe not every aspect but overall good!

Have you read Neil Gaiman's wish for 2012? If you haven't, please do.  His past wishes for us to find someone to love and to receive love from and to spread more kindness and wisdom is only slightly eclipsed for his wish that we make mistakes. Showing that we are taking risks, and living and growing.  I second his wish.

In preparing for this awesome year ahead, I want to take a look back at some of my favorite reads of the past year.
January - Split by Swati Avasthi

February - Okay For Now by Gary Schmidt

March - Paranormalcy by Kierstin White

April - Bruiser by Neal Shusterman

May - Dark Water by Laura McNeil

June - Sidekicks by Jack Ferraiolo and Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick

July - This Dark Endeavor by Kenneth Oppel

August - The Penderwicks at Point Mouette by Jeanne Birdsall

September - Gray Wolf Throne by Cinda Williams Chima and Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

October - The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

November - Bigger Than a Bread Box by Laurel Snyder

December - Icefall by Matthew J. Kirby

Best Book of 2011 - Icefall by Matthew J. Kirby - I cannot begin to explain the tension that Kirby builds up as we try to figure out who the traitor is in this secluded stronghold. Then, when you know, you wonder how they will get away alive! Icefall will move you to tears! The landscape is vivid and Solveig's emotions and thoughts are yours. A Must Read!
