2010 Potential Newberys (of Color)

My internship Supervisor is starting her Mock Newbery Club. First she gathered a list of all children's books that garnered starred reviews. Second is determining if those authors are US Citizens or make their home in the US.

As I was completing part two I noticed the following authors of color

Jumped by Rita Williams-Garcia
Peace, Locomotion by Jaqueline Woodson
Return to Sender by Julia Alvarez
The Rock and The River by Kekla Magoon
Coretta Scott by Ntozake Shange
Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice by Phillip Hoose
Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith
Diego: Bigger Than Life by Carmen T. Bernier-Grande

I'm not sure if this is different than normal because I don't really follow the Newbery's even though I purchase them for the school each year. I just thought this was interesting.

What are your thoughts?

  2. KB, do you mean the number of writers of color is different? Woodson is no stranger on the list and neither is Williams Garcia.

I'm glad to see this short list. You've listed some titles I have not read. I highly recommend Magoon if you haven't read her already. I reviewed her book.I won it at Doret's. I hope Magoon is recognized because it would greatly help her career and I think she is an exceptional writer. Woodson and Williams are highly respected now not winning doesn't carry the same consequences. Jumped is literary sitting on my shelf. Flygirl is on my tbr and so is Woodson. The others I'm going to look for. Thanks.

  3. Susan: I meant how many there were. I was wondering if this is about normal but i don't think so! I have both Jumped and Flygirl here with me. I need to get on both of those. I read your review of Magoon's book and will be purchasing that one to read!

  4. KB thanks for posting this. It's nice to see. Susan, to see 8 authors of color being listed as possible Newbery contenders in May is very different and it makes me very happy. Though Coretta Scott by Ntozake Shange or Claudette Colvin by Phillip Hoose, can't win -picture books. Like Susan, I loved Rock and the River. Out of all the books listed I believe it has the best chance at a Newbery. I loved Flygirl,,just worried its out of the age range. Now I am off to look up Diego: Bigger than life. Thanks again

  5. Diego:Bigger than life is a picture so it can't win. But OMG its illustrated by David Diaz, I love his work.

  6. Doret: I don't see anywhere in the criteria that it can't be a picture book.

The book must have a plot though. Check out 2008's Good Masters or 1989's Joyful Noise. I'm not sure though. That might be my next step in the process. I am planning on reading all of these though!
