Read A Thon April 2009 - Update 8

Went to take a nap at around 4:30 am and didn't get back up until 8:30 this morning!!!!! So, I read more of King of the Screwups by KL Going. Liam has been trying to pretend that he's a nerd but he is way too dumb. I love how Going has integrated flashbacks of Liam as a kid so that we can understand why he's the way he is now. I'm trying to understand how Pete and Allan could be brothers and be so very different.

That was so much fun. I know now NOT to take a nap with only four hours left and NOT to read in bed because it makes you tired. I look forward to the October Read A Thon!

Next time I might even try having this as a school fundraiser library/overnighter type thing. We could have different activities like Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution, etc. Money could be raised for the library to help with our remodeling fund. Hmmm...

Started a new book: King of the Screwups by KL Going. Liam got kicked out of his house and now lives with his openly gay uncle "Aunt Pete". He's trying to convince his dad and everyone else that he's changed so he is trying to dress "studiously". KL Going has a great since of humor and it is very welcomed right now!! Only 4 more hours!

Read A Thon April 2009 - Update 5

Still reading The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong. pg 236 of 359. Tori, Simon, Chloe and Derek are trying to find a friend of Simon's dad. They've had to move around a lot and Chloe had her face cut by a homeless girl. Tori and Simon are on a bus while Derek and Chloe stopped off so that Derek could change. He got about 3/4 of the way before the change reversed itself. There appears to be some sort of romance in the air between those two but Derek keeps pushing Chloe towards Simon, prolly cause he thinks he might hurt her.

Read A Thon April 2009 - Hour 16 Meme

I took the color test. You had to arrange colors in order on four different bars. It was really hard. Especially since I dont have the lights on because my DD is sleeping on the couch to be near me! Here are my results:

My eyes feel a little better though. Gave me something different to focus on since it's a different color!

Reading The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong alright it's really starting to pick up. We know everyone's powers and we've found out that Tori's mom is a witch just like Tori! Dr. Davidoff runs a group called the Edison Group that Tori's mom is part of. Chloe's Aunt Lauren is also part of the group but she doesn't have any powers. Her brother, Chloe's uncle, was a necromancer too. The edison group experimented on Chloe and the other kids when they were little. They were hoping to decrease their powers so that they could assimilate better. This didnt work. Their powers actually became stronger and less controllable. Now Chloe and Tori are trying to find Simon and Derek and hopefully Kit, Simon's dad. He is a supernatural too and supposedly he can help them.

Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now?

I'm reading Broken Soup by Jenny Valentine

2. How many books have you read so far?

This is my second book. I also went to see 17 Again!

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong is sounding good!

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?

Not really - I just havent really done anything productive like laundry or cooking dinner!

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

I had to take my 13yo out to the movies and its on the other side of town. We also had to pick up her friend and then drop the friend off. My daughter then wanted to talk for a while.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

I dont really read that fast!!!!

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

NO, I really love it. I love the challenges and the cheerleaders and everything!

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?

Next year I will follow the advice and start with shorter books or I will just change my expectations. I'm also going to talk my daughter into doing it with me!

9. Are you getting tired yet?

Not really. The movie really helped. It was a long break in the middle.

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?

I'm using this mark my time bookmark timer thingy and helps me keep a running total of the time I've read.

Read A Thon April 2009 - Broken Soup - Update 1

This is an interesting book. Jenny Valentine likes coincidences. There is one in Me, The Missing and The Dead and there is one in this book too. Harper Greene is my favorite character in the book. He travels a lot and right now he is living in an ambulance that's been converted into a van.

I'm on page 150.

This challenge is from Jessica - The Curious Reader

What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in?
My favorite local library is the St. Francis branch of the St. Joseph County Public Library. It's in South Bend, IN

How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you?
I go to the library once a week. They don't really know me yet but they always have what I need!

Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve?
Some days I browse and some days I pick up reserves. Depends on my supply levels! Some days I do both!

What is your favorite thing about your local library?
My favorite thing about the library is that they either have what I want or they quickly get it.

I also love my school library, since I am the librarian! It is the second place I look for books!

Here's my comic of the Summoning. I highly recommend it!

Read A Thon April 2009 - The Summoning - Update 4

Ok - now on 370 about 20 more to go.

We found out Derek is a werewolf. Simon can do some spells. Dont know about Rae yet - I think she may be hiding something. She might be a spy. It turns out that Tori is actually crazy. Also, the adults KNOW the children have powers. Apparently the founder of the Lyle House used to bring supernaturals there to do experiments on them. Chloe learned this by talking to the ghosts. Now Chloe, Derek, Simon and Rae are on the run and Dr. Davidoff and the others are chasing them. Chloe is hurt and the girls have been separated from the boys!

Read A Thon April 2009 - The Summoning - Update 3

Ok top of the 3rd hour! Only on 212!

Derek and Simon have filled Chloe in on a little of their background. Turns out Derek is sort of a superman and also extremely bright. We keep seeing Liz as a ghost so Chloe is wondering if she is dead. Rae and Chloe broke into the closet in the basement but Chloe didn't get to talk to a ghost. She did find a box of old property records though!

Ok - gonna do my first mini - challenge over at Bart's Bookshelf.

Read A Thon April 2009 - The Summoning - Update 2

Ok, I'm about 2 hrs in and only on p. 169. Im a lot slower than I thought! Anyway, we just uncovered some possible powers for the other students at the Lyle House with Chloe.
  • Simon - can levitate things
  • Rae - can burn people with their touch
Chloe's Aunt Lauren seems to be hiding something. She's really upset over Derek "bothering" Chloe. Hmm....

3 facts about me …

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?

I have 10 official books in my pile and then some second stringers. See picture here.

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?

I want to read at least 10 books and review 5 of them.

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, Any advice for people doing this for the first time?

This is my first time - no advice - just have fun! I sure am!

Read A Thon April 2009 - The Summoning - Update 1

Started at 8:09. Took a while to get the Mark-my-time book mark timer thingy working. 87 pages in. So far we've met Chloe and she sees dead people. She saw a custodian who looked as if he was in a fire and he started chasing her around the school - appears he needs help so he can leave the school - she was screaming, teachers came and they sent her to a group home. Most interesting resident so far - Liz - she can moves things with her mind.
